Jimmy Stewart Airport

The Indiana County - Jimmy Stewart Airport is owned by Indiana County and operated by the Indiana County Airport Authority to serve the general aviation needs of the County and surrounding communities. The Airport consists of 276 acres with a 4,000 foot long by 75 foot wide runway, parallel taxiway system, navigational aids, Terminal Building, County and private hangars, a snow removal equipment storage building, maintenance facilities, an avionics shop, a flight training school, and fuel facilities. There is currently no scheduled air service with connections to other airports.

A new Master Plan for the Airport was approved by the PennDOT Bureau of Aviation in December, 2002 which proposed the construction of a new runway (100 feet wide by 5,500 feet long) south of the existing runway. The new runway, an upgrade to the instrument landing system, and other related improvements will provide a better facility for the aviation community, and serve to attract business and industry to the area. The approval process with federal and state aviation officials has been successfully completed for the proposed project, and the initial phase of the project is currently underway through a design contract with Lee-Simpson Associates, Inc. Construction will occur in four phases with work scheduled to begin in 2007 and be completed in 2011 at a total estimated cost of over $19 million.

The Indiana County Office of Planning and Development has provided Staff and technical assistance to the Indiana County Airport Authority since the Authority was incorporated in 1980. This assistance has included compliance with federal and state aviation regulations, consultant selection, grant applications, grant administration, payment of invoices, and maintenance of project records.
